La Fresneda, Spain
This project forms part of our awarded proposal for the 2025 Richard H. Driehaus Architecture Competition. Set within the historic hill town of La Fresneda, the scheme brings together a series of new homes designed to sit comfortably within the existing fabric.
Working with the grain of the historic town, the scheme introduces a series of modest buildings arranged around stepped streets and planted courtyards.
The design draws on local construction techniques and materials - stone, lime plaster, timber - and applies them in a contemporary vernacular. New buildings extend the massing, rhythm and proportions of the existing fabric while adapting to modern patterns of living. Thresholds, arcades, and deep window reveals mediate between public and private life, creating a streetscape that feels at once lived-in and enduring.
