Fineline Studio developed concept designs for the refurbishment of a 140 m² maisonette in Nea Smyrni for a young family. The project focuses on reinterpreting the existing structure while revealing the architectural character already present within the building.

The defining feature of the apartment is its original pitched timber roof, whose exposed beams create a generous and expressive upper volume. The proposal reorganises the layout so that the primary living spaces are relocated to this upper level, allowing the kitchen, dining, and living areas to occupy the part of the house with the greatest height and natural light.

By removing the wall that previously separated the kitchen from the living areas, the plan opens into a continuous space beneath the timber roof. This intervention transforms the attic level into the social centre of the home, while the lower level accommodates the more private functions of the house.

The design retains and repairs the existing timber structure and floors, allowing the original materials to become the framework for the new interior. Natural finishes, warm timber tones, and simple detailing create a calm domestic environment that emphasises light, proportion, and material continuity.

The project explores how targeted spatial changes within an existing structure can significantly improve the quality and character of a home, while preserving the elements that make the building unique.
